. the president's public support of unions today poorly timed for another reason. chrysler's management forced to bow to the united autoworker union as the company rehired 13 employees who had been caught drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana while on the job. rysler's spokesman said the company was forced to respect a union arbitrator's desion. and while the president was in michigan, reports that a chinese auto parts company has purchased bankrupt a123 systems, a batte maker that received more than half of a $250 million taxpayer-funded obama stimulus grant. a123 systems was once heralded by energy secretary steven chu as a success story for amerin manufacturing. the green battery maker blaming weak demand for electric cars for their failure. china, obvioussy, has plans to fix all of that with a little help from the american taxpayer and, of course, the president. wile we focus on the fiscal cliff negotiations, or more appropately the iasse many our state governments aren't in much better shape. state pensionsystems, unfunded liabilities are now estimated to be in the range of $2.5 trillion

there were 13 sort of chrysler workers who were fired for using alcohol and marijuana on the job making cars. two years later all 13 of them got their jobs back basically because of union backed arbitration ad let them go ba to work. union rules to not make a very efficient and what everyrybody s looking to d is basically to ban the automatic deductions from payrolls gointo union fees for those who don't join union workers. they're trying to be very pro-worker. tracy: let's face it. i don't want to be forced at work, don't want to feel as a woer so is good for metoo. it feels almost odd entire south is still union where you get your northeast states all rights to work. why is there such a division >> i really can't tell you, but it's postmarked d the mentality the workershould be freed to make their own decisions. while republicans can push the bill through. obviously the unions and the uaw are crying uncle, but the time has come. tracy: union membership is falling precipitously. now you have political donations beinghe only reason the president is in this state backing this because otherwi

what happened to general motors or chrysler. yothey make it less profitable r unions. as a result you get more invested and more jobs. jobs are one thing michigan definitely needs. lori: i agree. the unions would argue many of the freedoms, many of the advantages their workers enjoy her because of the lobbies and the history they have had, therefore the unions are deservedly deserve their dues. >> if you can persuade workers to give you their money, that is fantastic, that is your constitutional right. they should not be forced to pay dues to the union. 20% of union households in michigan support the right to work law. probably because there's a awful lot of union workers don't go there again the value worth of their dues or supports priorities. they should have a choice, that is their right. lori: we have seen unions lose membership, lot less clout than in generations past. how do you characterize the influence of unions right now? >> it is a competitive marketplace. up through the late 70s the detroit automakers headlock on the u.s. market and about a million and a half members. sin
